Story Telling | The Dingpatch | Amber Tyler, Photographer

I recently had the opportunity to meet up with my good friend Kristin Opris for a story telling session. Kristin is a therapist who also writes in her free time as a hobby, and as her own form of therapy. Kristin is the author for the blog, The Dingpatch. The blog consists of real life stories from her childhood. Stories that all have a comedic twist. She includes illustrations also done by her that are both funny and relatable in the simplest way.

Have you ever met someone and just instantly connected? That’s the best way to describe the first time I met Kristin. We met in one of those scenarios where we just happened to be placed by each other at an event. Maybe call it fate? I call it divine planning. I was meant to be in that place at that time to meet her. Her husband is a videographer and he had his booth right next to mine at the Spokane Bridal Fair. I don’t normally do bridal fairs, but I had just moved to the area and this was one of the best ways to market my business. Jason and Kristin had just moved to the area as well so he was there for the same reason. Kristin doesn’t normally help him with these type of events, but it all just happened to work out that she was there. Once we started talking I knew I had to stay in contact with this couple. They were just so genuine and easy to talk to. I even ended up having a conversation with Kristin about some of the grief and current struggles my family had been going through. Things that I had never said out loud to anyone outside of my family. Things that needed to be let out. It was like my own much needed therapy session. I couldn’t believe that I had just happened to be placed next to someone that not only understood my pain, but dealt with these type of situations on a daily basis in her profession. It was the first time anyone had ever told me that it was ok to feel the way I was feeling, and it set me free.

Now I don’t just go around telling people my life struggles, and that’s why I call it divine planning. I needed her gift of empathy. We are placed in people’s lives for a reason. We have so many gifts and talents that we may see as insignificant, but they hold so much weight in other people’s lives. Kristin’s blog is her way of processing her own pain, and using her gift to tell a story. Stories that might otherwise be embarrassing or seem imperfect, but through a comedic lens they show us that we all face these things. We can choose to feel shame or we can use it to fight the constant drive in the world that says you have to be perfect.

Whitney + Jared | Idaho Backyard Wedding | Amber Tyler Photographer

At the beginning of July, I had the opportunity to photograph the wedding of Jared and Whitney. They all got ready at a vacation rental in Kellogg, ID and then had their wedding in their own back yard, tucked away in the small town of Osburn, Idaho. This wasn’t just your regular back yard though. It was surrounded by mountains and a field of daisy’s. No matter which direction you looked, the view was amazing. We were able to do all of the portraits right there, because leaving to find a better location wasn’t necessary. I loved the feel of this wedding. It was very laid back, but full of amazing details. The style was rustic boho and full of charm. The bride opted for a less traditional dress, which I feel totally matched her personality and the over all style and feel of the wedding. The couple planted a tree during the ceremony to symbolize their union and love for one another.

The bridal party was made up of the best of friends as well as many family members. A lot of love was put into this wedding. Jared and his father hand made the tables, and then Jared also made the teepee and the shed that was used for the desserts. The boxes holding all of the succulent center pieces were also handmade by them.

I loved being a part of this wedding. I truly felt more like a guest. All of bridal party and the families of the bride and groom made me feel so welcome. There were many touching moments at this wedding as well.. such as Jared saying vows to not only Whitney, but to their daughter Fynnlee as well. He also had a first dance with her, which did ultimately end up a whole family dance with Whitney and their son Forest too. Whitney and Jared were so in the moment and relaxed, so when it came time for portraits everything was just so natural.

Whitney and Jared,

Thank you so much for having me photograph this special day for the two of you. The wedding was absolutely perfect and I enjoyed getting to know your family. The day was filled with love, joy, laughter, and such special moments that I will always remember. Please tell Evan I posted these photos on Facebook, I promised him I would.

Sincerely,

Amber Tyler

Lily + Ruslan | Spokane Wedding | Amber Tyler Photographer

It was such a great experience getting to photograph Lily and Ruslan’s wedding! They are such a sweet couple with amazing friends and family that we all got to celebrate with for the day. This wedding was a little different than the usual for me though. The families are Russian, so the whole ceremony and reception was conducted in Russian. At first I was a little nervous because there are cues I listen for at every wedding to know whats coming next, but in this case I had to read body language and go based off of emotion since I do not speak the language. What I found to be so significant is that even though I did not understand the language, there was an overwhelming sense of love and presence of God in their ceremony. The families of each side took turns saying a prayer for the bride and groom, and I couldn’t understand it, yet I could feel it. Both sides were so full of love and pure joy for this couple. These feelings and emotions are universal no matter what language they are spoken in.

After the ceremony, we went to the church for their reception where they ate, played some games, watched some videos and slideshows of the couple from when they were younger, and their family and friends sang songs throughout the evening for them. It was so different from the usual reception that I am used to, but it was so personal and touching. A refreshing change up! Everything from the food to table details were all done by friends and family. They all put their hearts into this wedding.

After the reception we headed out to Farragut Park for the bride/groom and bridal party portraits. We had so much fun exploring the scenery that the park had to offer, and the light was so beautiful. As you can see below, this wedding party is GORGEOUS! Check out a few of my favorite shots below!

Lily and Ruslan,

Thank you so much for letting me be a part of your special day. There were many firsts I got to experience by you sharing this day with me. Your families are truly amazing and I can’t wait to see what God has in store for the future for both of you!

Sincerely,

Amber Tyler
